Redefining Hari Raya 2020 Amid Covid-19

We’ve had a one of a kind Ramadan this year with the Movement Control Order (MCO) in place. No bazaar Ramadan, no makan-makan gatherings with friends and relatives, and no terawih in mosques. And the thought that has crossed many of our minds – how will we be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in 2020?

We’re used to spending Ramadan in excitement, and in anticipation for the month of Syawal. Mana nak beli baju raya? First day raya nak masak apa? Berapa hari nak take leave balik kampong? We have gotten used to experiencing balik kampung – driving long hours together, bunking in together in grandma’s living room, going over yearly family traditions, cooking and sharing meals together as well as praying shoulder-to-shoulder.

But with COVID-19 still lingering around, our new norm remains – social distancing, constant sanitizing, wearing gloves, masks, and more importantly,  staying at home. This means a smaller raya celebration with less visitors, and less visiting. Some of us may even be celebrating separately from our loved ones.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri will no doubt be very different this year.

But this Ramadan has shown us that celebrating Raya while adhering to COVID-19 safety is doable. Instead of going to the mosque, prayers were conducted at home with family members. People found ways to give to charities, making contributions to nonprofit organisations online and buying their bazaar favourites from e-bazaar shops online. Some of us picked up new skills like cooking at home – whether jadi or tak jadi is a whole different story lah! Somehow, we managed to get used to a whole new lifestyle!

Most of us will be having smaller gatherings this year, but one important part of our raya celebrations will not change  – and that is, good food is a must!

Delicious food is a staple for a festive Hari Raya, macam lemang, ketupat, and rendang – nostalgic kampong delights that we know by sight, scent and taste. With or without the MCO in place, we can still enjoy our delicious raya food!

Let us be a part of your raya celebrations! Authentic Kampong meals or masakan Melayu sedap-sedap! From the hot and spicy Beef Rendang, savoury Ayam Kurma, classic Curry Puffs, to the dessert manis-manis macam Cekodok Pisang and Rich Chocolate Cake – we have them all!
